What is HSN Code? A Complete Guide to Harmonized System of Nomenclature
HSN code — short for Harmonized System of Nomenclature — is a globally recognized 6-digit classification code used to systematically categorize goods for taxation and trade. Whether you're a business owner, importer, exporter, or GST filer, understanding HSN codes is essential for compliance and smooth operations.

How does HSN code work?
Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), the HSN system organizes over 5,000 commodity groups into a structured hierarchy of 21 sections, 99 chapters, 1,244 headings, and 5,224 subheadings. Each product is assigned a unique 6-digit code that follows a logical, legally defined framework — making classification consistent across borders.
In India, two additional digits are appended to the standard 6-digit code, creating an 8-digit classification system that allows for even more granular product identification — particularly important for customs and central excise purposes.

Why is HSN code important under GST?
HSN codes bring structure and global consistency to India's GST system. Here's why they matter for every registered business:
Eliminates manual descriptions
No need to write out lengthy product descriptions in every invoice. The HSN code conveys all classification information automatically.
Faster, automated GST return filing
GST returns are processed automatically using HSN codes, reducing errors and saving time during GSTR-1 filing.
Facilitates international trade
A single HSN code is recognized in 200+ countries, making cross-border trade seamless. All 8 digits are mandatory for exports and imports.
Standardizes tax statistics
Governments and customs authorities use HSN data to track trade volumes, set tariffs, and build economic policy.
HSN code requirements under GST (from 1 April 2021)
As per CGST notification 78/2020 (dated 15 October 2020), HSN code declaration rules are based on annual turnover:
| Annual turnover | Invoice type | Digits required |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 crore | B2B invoices (mandatory) / B2C invoices (optional) | 4 digits |
| More than ₹5 crore | All invoices (mandatory) | 6 digits |
| Exports & imports | All invoices (mandatory) | 8 digits |
*Turnover refers to the previous financial year. For FY 2021–22 reporting, turnover of FY 2020–21 applies.
What is SAC code? (Services Accounting Code)
Just as goods are classified using HSN codes, services are categorized under SAC codes — Services Accounting Codes — for uniform recognition, measurement, and taxation under GST.
