What is GST Late Fee?
A late fee is an amount charged for delay in filing GST returns. When a GST registered taxpayer misses the deadline for filing GST returns such as GSTR-3B, GSTR-1, or GSTR-4, a late fee is levied for each day of delay.
Daily Penalty
The fee is calculated per day from the day after the due date until the actual date of filing.
Maximum Cap
The government has prescribed maximum limits for late fees based on the type of return and turnover.
How Late Fee is Calculated?
Calculation Logic
The late fee is divided equally between CGST and SGST/UTGST. For inter-state returns, it applies as IGST in some cases, but usually, it is a combination of Central and State portions.

| Return Type | Nil Return | Regular Return | Max Cap |

Late Fee Waivers & Exemptions
Amnesty Schemes
The government occasionally launches amnesty schemes to waive or reduce late fees for past periods.
Technical Glitches
If the GST portal faces technical issues on the due date, the government may extend the deadline or waive fees.
Natural Calamities
In cases of severe floods or earthquakes, specific regions might get late fee waivers.
System Errors
If a late fee is wrongly calculated by the system, it can be contested via a grievance ticket.
Impact on Compliance Rating
Frequent delays in filing returns not only lead to late fees but also negatively impact your GST Compliance Rating. A low rating can make it difficult for your customers to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on purchases from you, potentially hurting your business relationships.
